The different cops Will and Cham are entrusted with the investigation, not suspecting that the search for the murderer will lead them into their own hell.

Hong Kong's enfant terrible is back: With LIMBO, Soi Cheang embarks on a journey into the abyss of mankind and, after excursions into the mainstream, returns to his uncompromising cinema in the vein of DOG BITE DOG. In rain-soaked monochrome compositions of exquisite visual power, the megalopolis becomes a repulsive nightmare world in which brutality replaces communication and civilised society is only the shadow of a memory. The new setting, fresh characters and a more complex backstory make it easy for newcomers to find their way around the SATAN'S SLAVES universe and lose themselves in Anwar’s sinister visual compositions. This time he ups the ante in terms of macabre gothic flair, nasty jump scares and gruesome deaths. COMMUNION in fact overtook the first part at the local box office and ranks third among the most successful Indonesian films of all time.

Outside, the new democracy is breaking ground, inside the old guards rule with arbitrariness and violence. Here Manuel awaits his trial, never to be scheduled. Time and again he witnesses how inconvenient cellmates disappear. For the prisoners organise themselves for their rights. And while colour television sets are introduced across the country, the cries for “Libertad!"; resound louder through the merciless walls.

Alberto Rodríguez' MARSHLAND arrested ten Goyas, PRISON 77 is now pleading for another triumph at the Spanish Oscar with 16 nominations.
